The N.C. High School Athletic Assoc. requires all paid coaches to be certified CPR and AED use.

New rules go into place this fall to help keep high school athletes safe in North Carolina.

The N.C. High School Athletic Association will require all paid coaches to be certified in CPR and AED use prior to coaching their sport beginning this fall. Wake County Schools is getting a jump start on this requirement by offering two days of certifications this week on Friday and Saturday. The sessions, which are all filled, will educate approximately 200 Wake County coaches at the WakeMed Raleigh Campus. “The safety of our students is always our top priority, and we are very excited that through our partnership with WakeMed Children’s Hospital we can provide such a great service that will benefit our coaches, student-athletes and the community as a whole,” said Deran Coe, the school system's director of athletics. The training will be free of charge for the Wake County coaches because of a partnership with the WakeMed Children's Hospital.

The fall sports season in North Carolina begins on July 31.
